Ten named to USA Cycling funded team for BMX SX World Cups #1 and #2

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Feb. 27, 2012) -USA Cycling is pleased to announce the roster of ten athletes it will send to rounds one and two of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Chula Vista, Calif. and Randaberg, Norway. The Chula Vista World Cup will kick off the season March 30-31 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.

Both events will count toward the 2011-2012 UCI BMX Nations rankings; which as of May 28, 2012 will determine each nation’s number of start spots for the 2012 Olympic Games set for August 9-10 in London. The United States currently sits in third place in the men’s overall nations rankings and in second in the ladies,’ putting them in current position to send a full contingent of BMX athletes to the Games with three men and two women.

Five riders will make up the USA Cycling men’s funded team with the top three Americans in the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup rankings receiving automatic nominations. After earning the bronze at last summer’s BMX Olympic Test Event and World Cup #3 Nic Long (Lakeside, Calif./Haro Bikes) will help lead the Americans on their home turf in Chula Vista and on to Norway. David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Free Agent-Rockstar), bronze-medalist from the 2011 Chula Vista World Cup, also received an automatic nomination and will be joined on the squad by Connor Fields (Henderson, N.V./Chase BMX) who won the series’ final round in Chula Vista last fall. Rounding out the men’s team will be discretionary picks, Corben Sharrah (Tucson, Ariz./GT Bicycles) and Mike Day (San Diego, Calif./GT Bicycles). Sharrah won last season’s UCI BMX Supercross World Cup round 1 contest in South Africa and Day is best known as the silver medalist from the inaugural Olympic BMX competition in Beijing.

Five talented ladies will make up the women’s team as Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) and Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bikes) both earned automatic nominations to the team by virtue of their fifth- and sixth-place rankings in the UCI’S Supercross World Cup standings. The pair are fresh off a one-two finish at the final SX World Cup last season in Chula Vista. Amanda Geving (Largo, Fla./MCS Bicycles), reigning USA Cycling BMX National Champion Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline) and Amanda Carr (Punta Gorda, Fla.,/ Endeavor-Paul Williams) will also represent USA Cycling as a discretionary selections in both Chula Vista and Randaberg.

Training Camp Florida Done

I had a nice training camp in Florida and riding my bike again went better than expected, but watching the race in Oldsmar from the sideline isn’t my thing…

When I left home a few weeks ago I had no expectations about riding the track again, because it was 3 months ago since my crash in Genéva and I didn’t know if my wrist allows me to ride again? So I went to the Okeeheelee BMX track in West Palm Beach with no expectations and fortunately it worked out better than I ever expected.

Of course my wrist hurts when I ride the track, but I can feel the difference between the first and second week… It’s getting less painful and holding my bar is going better. Just when the jumps are really steep or the track is really bumpy it can hurt. Beside of my wrist riding is going very well. I have to adjust myself a little, because the wrist/ hand will never have the same mobility and flexibility like before. I just need some more time to get used to it and I need some more strength to hold my bar during full laps. This is something I’m going to work on till the first World Cup (UCI BMX Supercross) in Chula Vista, USA in the end of March.

The last 2 weeks went by very fast. Training was very intense for me, because I didn’t ride the track for a long time, but overall I’m satisfied about my improvements and I know where I am right now. I made a new training movie about myself riding the track again, check it out!

Recently, the team did a race in Oldsmar. The whole team looked good, while I was watching from the sidelines… It didn’t make me happy to watch, so hopefully I can race soon!

Answer/Rennen Factory Team Tears Up The Comp At USABMX Oldsmar National!

Answer/Rennen Made the trip to what is arguably the most technical track in the USABMX directory, Oldsmar FL. John Sawyer and Crew of Oldsmar BMX not only outdid themselves this year with a monstrous tech layout but at the same time this track is smooth as glass and landscaped better than most individuals homes.

This was a very important Race for the Answer/Rennen Team as this is also where our Main Sponsor's Answer BMX and SSquared calls home. Answer/Rennen went on to capture a Day 2 win with our Sister team Jim Buchanan's Answer-SSquared-TLD getting the win on day 1, (congrats guys/girls). By the end of the weekend there was a whole lot of Answer, Rennen and SSquared mounted bikes winning race after race.

Here is how your favorite riders finished on the weekend

9X/Cru Nate Coyman
Dual cruiser podium spots both days has Nate getting back into the swing of things here on the east coast

10X Zach Von Bergen
was looking to air out on his home track but the high winds kept him grounded most of the weekend despite that he pulled through a impressive 2nd place finish on Sunday

10G/cru Bailey Brannen
nickname is "Bad Girl" and when you call Oldsmar your local track and go on to Double-Double in cruiser and 20 I think the title is very deserving. Bailey also got some local media coverage before the national. Check out THIS VIDEO LINK to see her proud mom and dad along with what Bailey had to say about her BMX racing.

12X Erik Meyer wasn't liking the wind either but Sunday proved to be a Great day after some aggressive riding gave Erik the win in 12X

15X Justin Knapper came away with a 1st and 2nd place finish in 15 cruiser. Look for a motivated Justin at upcoming usabmx nationals he's determined and the class should watch out

13G Abbie Macleod our newest teenager has been showing tremendous improvement over the last few weeks and Abbie's hard work Is on the verge of paying off as she was just shy of the podium after aging up just a few days before the race.

16X Cody Simson was at the race supporting the team but is still out with his back injury. A few more weeks and we'll be seeing him tearing up a track soon

17-27G Shelby Stacy
went on to dominate 17-27 girls all weekend skying the jumps while the rest of her class just watched her pull away. In Jr women she came away with podium finishes

17-18X Austin Loebe
could be found out front leading all of the races he was in unfortunately in both 17-18x mains he ended up on the ground both days. Austin turned 19 the day after the race and becomes our 19-27X in Morristown where he is still chasing that first win of the season.

28-35X Justin Wike
Wikeout was busy tweeting encouraging messages to his teammates all weekend from his home in Reno.

36-40X/Cru Shawn Diprete
went onto win 36-40 cru with ease on day 1 and then in 36-40X main he got a little anxious being in second going through the S-Turn and wiped out. in doing so he suffered a dislocated pinky finger and we spent the next few hrs in the local ER getting it popped back in place, check out the video! http://youtu.be/eTJDNKShYxw

A-Pro Max Egdorf
was working hard for finishes on the super demanding track and ended the weekend with a 6th place finish on Sunday

A-Pro Phil Delizia
Is this the year of the Dragon? I don't know but I do know that Phil Delizia is back and is determined to sail through A-Pro and get back to AA. With a 1st and 2nd place finishes on the weekend he's bound to do so.

Redline Oldsmar Race Report

By the Redline BMX Race team on February 14, 2012

For the first USA BMX Race of the 2012 season, the entire International Redline team headed down to Oldsmar, Florida to duke it out with pros from around the world and nearly freeze to death in the very un-Florida weather which included lows of 30 and nasty gusts of wind.

Joining the team for the first time since the Summer of 2011 was Alise Post who has finally recovered from her torn ACL and showed no signs of trouble while riding her Signature Redline Flight AP to the podium on Day 1 of the race with a Second, on day two however her luck changed when she fell on the first straight in her semi. Don't worry about injuries, she jumped right back to her feet. Former ABA Champion Sam Willoughby also made a couple of appearances on the podium, taking a second on saturday paired with a First on Sunday, quickly putting him in the points lead for the first ever USA BMX title.

Also finding their way in to the main events were Dutch rider's Merle Van Benthem picking up a 4th and 6th and Jelle Van Gorkom, who finished out the weekend with a pair of 6ths.

Canadian Tory Nyhaug has a couple of unfortunate endings this weekend, Saturday while in qualifying position blowing up on the last set of the prosecution, knocking him out of the races and then again on Sunday when he blew both feet out of the pedals in the Semi. Also making a trek around the world included the likes of Masa Sampei who made the trip all the way from Japan. though Masa didn't quite make it to the mains, his riding was solid all weekend.

Redline's, Masa Sampei

JRBicycles.com UK Team Report

Round 1 British National Series

Round 1 of the British National series took place at the new Manchester Indoor Cycle Centre. This is home to the only indoor BMX track in the UK. The venue is equipped with both a 5 metre and 8 metre start hills and the track is a real test for all riders.

The J&R UK team was in attendance albeit with a few riders missing due to holiday.. We had Josh Wilkins in the 13's, Ben Martinez in 30+ Masters, Mick Gough in Vets and Darren O'Brien riding in 2 classes, Vets and 40-44 cruiser.

Josh got off to a great start in first moto with a 3rd place finish throwing a few swoops along the way. The 2nd moto did not go to plan with a bad gate and he found it harder to work his way through the pack and finished 6th. The 3rd and final moto he was back on the bubble with another solid 3rd place. This guaranteed him a place in the quarters why finishing 16th after the round of moto's.

Josh had a tough draw in the quarter finals with 3 riders who went on to make the 'A final'. Josh had a good gate and hit the first corner in 5th spot as he pushed to get that 4th spot he clipped out and the race was all but over. Josh will be back for rounds 2&3 ready to make his mark.

Darren had a great set of results in his first 3 moto's on the cruiser with a 3rd and two 2nd's which saw ease through to the quarter finals. Darren also had a good set of results in vets on the 20 inch with a 1st, 3rd and 4th and that again saw him through to the semi finals.

Darren transferred on his cruiser to the semi finals but then had a tough draw and went out by a bikes length in the semi finals so it was 'B final on the cruiser'. The 20 inch was a different story with Darren flying out of the gate and taking an early lead. He kept it together for a good lap and took 2nd spot seeing him through to the 'A final'.

Final time and it was going to be a tough lap. Darren had a great start and as 2nd into the first corner. Everything was going great down the 2nd straight jumping both sets of doubles to keep the 2nd spot. The 3rd straight did not got as planned, Darren went for the manual and flipped the bike and came off. Luckily he escaped unharmed but the 2nd spot had gone and he had to settle for 8th. Darren was gutted but all in all it was a great to see him making the main and I am sure he will be back looking for that win at Rounds 2&3

Mick Gough s ready to rock and roll on the track choosing to put all his efforts into the 20 inch rather than riding the 20 inch and cruiser. This paid off with Mick picking up 3rd, 4th and 6th and progressing through to the semi finals. Mick gave it is all in the semi but could not make the moves stick so it was a 'B final' for Mick.

Ben Martinez on the podium in 30+ masters

Ben Martinez was about to enter the Masters arena for the first time. Ben was stepping up an age from 25-29 to one of the most competitive classes the is in 30+ masters. Some of the old time big hitters turned up to give the younger guns a run for their money. Dale Holmes and Dylan Clayton to mention but a few. Ben was not fazed by this and picked up a set of good moto results with a 3rd, 2nd and 4th. This saw Ben progress through from 31 riders to the semi finals.

Ben made a good start in the semi and went flat out but a mistake in the first corner saw him drop from 3rd to 5th. Ben got on the pedals and mistake by the 2 guys in front saw in move back to 4th and that is where he finished going through to the main.

Masters main with the big hitters on the gate. Ben had a bad gate and it saw him go into the first corner with some work to do.With a good corner a little carnage on the first jump on the 2nd straight Ben moved up a few places to 5th . The guy in 4th then mad a mistake and Ben took his opportunity and took 3rd. That is how it finished with Ben taking 3rd place and a great result in a stacked category and with little training over the short winter due to going home to Bolivia.

Team Manager Sean Bowditch commented ‘This is a great start to the season and hopefuly this is the first of many Podiums in 2012’

MCGRATH SIGNS-UP FOR
FIVE-YEAR ENCORE WITH SPY

CARLSBAD, Calif.—SPY Inc. (OTCBB:XSPY) today announced a renewed sponsorship deal with seven-time AMA Supercross Champion and Motorsports Hall of Fame Inductee Jeremy McGrath. He will endorse signature SPY + Jeremy McGrath KlutchMX goggles and SPY Showtime sunglasses through 2017.

“Jeremy is a founder of our company, he’s the winningest Supercross racer in history, and he helped turn Supercross into a pop-cultural and motorsports mainstay with his talent and showmanship—his is an integral part of SPY and an icon of our brand,” says Victor Sheldon, SPY motorsports marketing manager.

McGrath won seven Supercross Championships titles between 1993 and 2000 and amassed a record 72 main event wins. His charisma and flair transcended the sport, propelling him to mega-stardom while recruiting to the sport of Supercross a fan base that extended well beyond the universe of motor heads.  Some would argue he is responsible for the birth of freestyle motocross, when he unveiled his signature Nac-Nac, a maneuver he started throwing around in races in ’94 when he started with SPY.

“I’ve been with SPY since Day 1, the Company is ‘home’ to me and the people that work there are like family to me,” says McGrath. “They keep it real in everything they do and continue to make the best products out there—they just look better and work better. That’s what we set out to do in the beginning and it’s what we do today. The Klutch is sick and the Showtime is the best-looking pair of sunglasses I’ve ever worn. I’m just saying."

Since retiring from fulltime Supercross competition in 2003, McGrath still tests for factory Honda and competes in special events. He also pursues his passion for off-road truck racing as the captain of the Monster Energy/ReadyLift Stronghold Motorsports Pro 2 Unlimited (Toyo Tires) team in the Lucas Oil Off-road series.

For more information about SPY, log-on at spyoptic.com and facebook.com/spyoptic.

FBN/Hyper leaves its mark

on the 2012 Gator Nationals

Even at a setting in which riders were to be challenged by the nation’s most technical traditional style track, our thoughts were with one of our own suffering from stage IV Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer, Raul Gomez "will win this race" and I was happy to see so many purchasing the red wrist bands to help our fellow rider in the most important race of his life.

For years Bizzarro BMX has churned out competitive teams at the highest level of team competition in the nation, and that won’t change in 2012. In Oldsmar, Florida the FBN/Hyper Factory took to the track and showed many the talent this team posses.

“A” pro Warren Mcdow ended his day in the first turn of the main event Saturday night, but showed his teammates and everyone else at the event just what kind of skill and power he has on the track as he was at the front in every lap he was in all day long.

Lance McGuire showed why he has that #1 on his plate Saturday night with the win in the 28/35 expert class. Saturday night it seemed as if the restaurant next to the host hotel was offering up some less then quality food, as apparent with the absence of a top name elite rider Sunday. Lance suffered the same fate but fought through the race Sunday till making a mistake in the last straight going for the lead in the main event.

Layne Gainer can flat out ride a bike, as apparent by the numerous pics he scored online in the major news sites. Saturday Layne crashed in the Jr Mens semi and slammed the gate in the 16x main. Sunday he worked his way to a 5th in Jr Men and a 2nd in 16x.

Christopher White rode extremely well in a very deep field of riders and finished on the "podium" both days in both 14 expert and cruiser. Christopher's younger brother Anthony White is following right in his big brothers footsteps and his finishes this weekend prove it, 2nd and 4th in 12x.

Spencer Martin worked his way through Quarter finals both days to land a spot in the 14x mains, and with the type of talent he has on this team to draw from there is no limit to the amount of success he can achieve, as he continues to get better with every lap.

Niles Austin became the first ever FBN/Hyper team rider to win a national main event with his 26/30 cruiser win. That was almost immediately followed up by Emily Krickler taking the win in her 31/35 wo cruiser main.

Jim Paiva was not only a factor in 46/50 cruiser with a 3rd on day 2, but showed his skills with the camera lens as seen in the photos included in this report.

Maddy Mason battled hard both days to take a 2nd in 6 girls, and her brother Cam Mason had back luck in the 10x semi both days.

CJ Fisher battled strong in the 16x class both days but couldn’t find his way to the main event.

Team CycleCraft Tackles the Gator Nationals

The 2012 Gator Nationals rolled into Oldsmar BMX to thunderous applause. The motos were stacked with over 1,000 riders including National and World Champions. Team CycleCraft braved the 20mph crosswinds and cold weather arriving ready to rumble with more than a dozen racers of their own.

The star rider for the weekend was Randy Winfrey. He took on well known riders like National Number #1 Shawn DiPrete and Florida's own Guy Gibbs. Randy scored back to back 1st places finishes in the 36-40 Expert division. Could he be the next National Champion in this division?

On Sat Women's Master rider Michelle Cairns battled Felt's Meredith Lidstone for her first National win of the year. On Sunday, Michelle was placed in a much larger group facing younger racers like Answer Rennen's Shelby Stacy but she still managed to land herself on the podium in 3rd.

Paulo Moreira displayed how comfortable he is at big races when he went bar to bar against FBN/Hyper's Lance McGuire and Free Agent/Rockstar's Stephen Larralde. Paulo kept himself in the top half of competitors with a 5th place finish on Sat and 4th on Sun. He is truly a model for grace under pressure.

Meanwhile, Vinny Moreira broke through a field of 18 at Vet Pros to make the main and land in 6th on Sunday.

The Tiny Might McKenzie Gayheart enjoyed the view at the front of the pack all weekend. On both days she battled National Champ Bailey Brannen and Sportsblast rider Jamie McHenry. On Sat she took 1st on her 20" and 2nd on her Cruiser. On Sun she took 2nd on her 20" and 3rd on her Cruiser.

'K Town' Kaylee Reynolds took the long drive down from Georgia to duke it out with 12 other riders in the 13 Girls Class. She made the Saturday main taking 8th place.

'The Mailman' Shane Hall had bad luck in the 20" division suffering a slipped pedal and a broken chain keeping him out of the mains. However in the Cruiser class he took on riders like Free Agent/Rockstar's Juan Marin and All Tow Wrecking Crew's Kody Wong with Shane more than holding his own taking 3rd place on both days.

11 year old Joey Leto struggled through the Saturday races without making the big show. However his persistence shined through on Sunday when he scored 5th on Cruiser and even more impressive was how he battled through 17 riders to make the main on his 20 inch for a 6th place finish.

How tough was the competition at the 2012 Gator Nationals? Some race categories had as many 50 riders and the track did not allow for even the smallest of mistakes. Thomas Marchese, Bobby Owens, Brenden Kozicki, Allison Marchese, Justice Gagnon and Kody Garrett all could not find a path to the mains. We appreciate their valiant efforts.

The weekend was not an option for a handful of team members who had to sit it out with colds. Out sick (or injured) were Tony Lehman, Patrick Deats, Jeff Upshaw, Jordan Preston and Kevin Caccavale. Considering how chilly it got during the races, especially on Sunday morning where it reached 38 degrees, it was probably better that they rested. We wish them well and hope to see them at the next big race.

We would also like to take the time to thank our great sponsors for their support. We couldn’t do it without them: SmoothieKing, Daytona Toyota, Subway, Monster Energy, J&R Bicycles, Fly Racing, MCS, Profile Racing, Answer BMX, Kenda Tires, Deuce Brand sports watches, Alienation BMX, Chick-Fil-A and A’ME Grips.

One final announcement - Factory CycleCraft now has its very own Team Website. This is where people can learn a little about the riders and check out CycleCraft news updates. It has just been launched and more information will be added in the coming days.

Take a look at the Team Site here: www.TeamCycleCraft.com

Bikes INVADE RED BULL CRASHED ICE!
Recently, GT factory rider, Martijn Jaspers; 4X racer Joost Wichman; Bike trialer Rick Koekoek and Downhiller Nico Vink attended a promotion show during the Redbull Crashed Ice event in Valkenburg, Holland.

The Red Bull Crashed Ice Tour. Ice skating on steroids!

The Redbull Crashed Ice tour is a gnarly event that pits competitors against each other in a wild ice skate mounted charge down a KILLER course filled with jumps, steep drops, sharp turns and much mayhem combining Ice Skating, boarderX, BMX and Luge in to a........uhhhhhh, CRASH!

The boys rode down the 575 meter (1900 feet) long track down the hill with almost 400 spikes in each tire, tempting fate since their bikes don't usually stick to ice and the whole deal made for some AWESOME riding.

BOX Components & DK Team Up to Sponsor Marc Willers

Last week, the staffs of Cycle Group Inc. (CGI) and DK Bicycles spent the day in a rented meeting room in Fullerton finalizing the details of a one-year deal that makes DK the official frame sponsor of Marc Willers and the BOX Components Test Team.

Negotiations with DK started last year, when the company was among a half dozen frame suppliers that approached CGI about sponsorship.

"We're excited and really looking forward to working with DK. The company has a long history in BMX going back to 1979 and a very strong presence in the sport," said Toby Henderson, CGI's founder. "We were very fortunate to get several offers to sponsor Marc and BOX Components. But in DK we found a strategic partner not only willing, but ready to work with BOX Components as we develop new and innovative BMX products," he added.

The day after Toby and Bill Danishek, DK Bicycles' director, agreed in good faith to work together, DK product managers started the process to build Marc a frame.

"All of us are really excited about all the possibilities of working with BOX Components. Toby's successes as a product designer and innovator are a big part of why we wanted to team up with the brand. It's also great to have a rider like Marc Willers on a DK frame. We're looking forward to a long-term relationship," Bill said.

As it turns out, both companies were on the same product development path. DK began working on a 20-millimeter frame last fall. With BOX, Toby plans to continue developing 20-mil BMX components, which he successfully introduced some 18 months ago.

Marc Willers won the 2011 ABA National Number 1 Pro title, 10 ABA Nationals and two Supercross races using Toby's 20-mil products. Coincidentally, Marc's good friend and fellow New Zealander Corey Stafford is DK's rep in Australia. It was him who urged DK to develop 20-mil frames and components.

The deal means DK can focus on building frames and bikes while BOX supplies the 20-mil parts. "We're working on a lot of new products and technologies for BMX. We're very lucky to have a partner like DK that is willing to work with us as we develop our line," Toby said.

BOX Components also will provide support to the members of DK's factory team, including Barry Nobles and Tommy Zula, whenever possible. Marc and the BOX Components team's other sponsors include Promax, Fly Racing and ODI.

About Cycle Group, Inc.: CGI designs, manufactures and distributes BMX, mountain bike, road and other bicycle components under the BOX Components and Promax brand names. It's founder, Toby Henderson, is a BMX racing pioneer, member of the BMX Hall of Fame, U.S. Bicycle Hall of Fame, X-Games medalist, founder of T.H.E. Industries, co-founder of VSI Products and creator of other brands such as Sinz, Speed Bicycles, ITS, EYE BMX and Ave.

About DK Bicycles: DK was founded in 1979 by Charlie Danishek in Kettering, Ohio. The father of two BMX racers began making stems in his garage in his spare time. Within a few years, DK was an established name in BMX and Charlie was able to quit his day job and focus solely on DK. In the 1990s, DK introduced its first frames and found success in both racing and the burgeoning sport of dirt jumping. DK is currently owned by Huffy and is located in Centerville, Ohio, a few miles from the garage where it all started.
