USA starts BMX World Championships with strong show
The USA BMX riders proved too strong today at the UCI BMX World Championships in the first day of competition in Adelaide, Australia. Out of the 17 world titles on offer the USA challenge class showed their strength by winning a massive seven world plates while Australia received three. The action packed day marked the start of the four day competition involving over 2000 riders from 32 countries.
Today the five to fourteen year olds raced on the 310 metre purpose built indoor track. Both New Zealand and Japan claimed two wins white Argentinean, Czech and Netherland riders claimed one each.
For young competitors like six year old New Zealand rider, Rico Bearman, it was the promise of a PS 3 that inspired his win over defending World Champion, Moka Ban from Japan. The boys won the hearts of the crowd as they stood on the podium with their country flags tied around their shoulders.
The large field of Australian riders claimed a record 52 finalists. Racing continues Friday with the challenge classes from 15 to masters. The elite riders including the four Beijing Olympic medallists start practice tomorrow afternoon from 3.00 pm.
